How do you collect a stool sample for the doctor?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

I've thought of going in the cats' litter tray. Is that a good idea? This is a serious question. My doctor has asked me to give a sample by 12.30 tomorrow afternoon. No problem, I've got diarrhoea but I can't work out a way to catch it in a recepticle that doesn't make me feel sick.

Do you have a bowl or bucket you can go in, that you can sit on in the same way you would the toilet? Or otherwise a large container. Whatever you use, line it with paper, kitchen roll, toilet paper, or something else that will keep the container clean and make it easy for you to scoop it up.

You can't go in the litter tray if it means that litter will get mixed up in your sample. If you have nothing else to use then clear out all the litter from the tray and line it with a plastic carrier bag and kitchen roll or toilet paper, so that the litter tray stays clean and you can scoop up your sample easily.

You may find that you do gag when you're picking it up so try not to look at it too much, pick it up quickly. And don't eat or drink just before you do it, so that if you do gag, you won't actually be sick.

Best Wishes.

My cat has lost a lot of weight and is very thin - she also vomits / has runs - what’s wrong with her?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

My cat used to weigh over a stone and was very overweight.
She was a rescue cat from a Cats Protection Agency and I have rehomed problem cats in the past. She’s very skittish and nervous around people.

She’s also an indoor cat.

She gradually started to lose weight a year and a half ago.

Additionally, as she is so nervous (she was previously abused) she will not let me groom her and her coat gets very matted. I have taken her to a groomer when it has gotten very bad and it has once more - I’m booking her in tomorrow.

I hadn’t noticed how thin she’d got until some friends came to visit who haven’t seen her in a while and noticed. She’s now very bony but eats and eats.

Tinned cat food an certain biscuits make her vomit and have diarrhoea. On the vets recommendation I give her a Science Plan brand for fussy cats and her stools are now healthy and there’s minimum vomiting.

She is regularly wormed / flead and has a yearly check up and injection but I’m very worried about how thin she has got.

She’s always going to be skittish and hard to handle due to being abused and although likes affections, runs away if I gently approach her.

I’m booking her into the vets again tomorrow as I’m concerned and would love any thoughts.
Thanks for all your comments.

She's 5 / 6 years old - it wasn't very clear when I rehomed her.

Some of the vomit does have hair in it yes. I think that is part of the reason. Since changing her to the "fussy cat" food, her diarrhoea has improved. She seems lively and usual other than that.

She does always have lots of water and drinks a lot - but more than most cats as she only eats the recommended dry food anyway.

I hope it's nothing too serious and will update you when I've been to my vet tomorrow.

I have a cat who lost a lot of weight about 6 years ago, she is now 11 yrs old and has lived with diabetes for 6 years, I give her 2 shots of insulin a day and spot check her blood sugar with a human monitor/lancets. I think the Vet will check for this, I HOPE ITs nothing, but so happy you are taking her to the VET, make sure you research diabetes, cats need to eat high protein not grains and especially if they have high blood sugar!! GOOD LUCK… see like a lot of info for diabetes

Diarrhoea Problem for a 11 Month old Bengal?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

First off, let me introduce my cat. She is a brown bengal, and is only about 11 months old. We got her when she was 5 months old. Anyways, she's had diarrhoea for about a week now. We haven't changed her diet, although we have introduced a new kitten to the household about 3 weeks ago. We took her off her "treats", which we thought were the problem, although this led to no avail.

My Vet is telling us that we should "investigate the problem before making an appointment", but we have failed to find the problem.

The only suspicion we have that is the cause of the problem is the new kitten, although is there anything I can do about that? My cat and the new kitten fought a bit at first, although they have settled down, and now can sleep on the same place, groom each other, etc.

Any help is appreciated.
Oh, and she's also drinking about 3 times more than she used to.
Thanks, it probably is due to either worms or because the Bengal cleans the kitty's bum, as she probably feels as she if the mother.

My cat had chronic diarrhea for almost six months before we figured out what was wrong for her. If you haven't already, test for:

Gonorrhea
Worms (usually kittens have worms until they're old enough to be dewormed- your bengal might've caught it.)
Any parasites or bacteria
IBS (by trying a steroid treatment. That's what it ultimately was with my cat)

Also, your vet can give you some probiotic powder from Purina to help regulate the bacteria in her digestive tract. It's a natural way that she might get some relief. If it is stress related, this could be it.

Basically, try and test for everything. Something is bound to pop up.

why does my cat leak smelly stuff?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

i picked him up and he leaked something that smelled revolting -it wasnt diarrhoea as it was clear, it wasnt exactly around his anus, more the back of his legs. he has done it a few times now and it smells awful and the smell doesnt fade ffor hours- i washed my hands 5 or 6 times and it kept coming back. i think it may be something to do with his glands but im not sure
he is 3 years old, neutered and male

This happens to our cat too, it is the anal glands. It is a revolting smell that lingers for hours. The vet can do a procedure where he extracts the anal glands but this is v v v painful for the cat. You can leave the cat as it does them no harm, but expect the glands to keep popping on the odd occasion usually when you pick them up as it squeezes the right places! Hope this helps.

i'm worried .. my cat has anemia..please help..what can i do?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

my cat was weak, vomitting, had diarrhoea and wasn't eating, so i took her to the vet and he took her temperature and it was very high (40°C) so he took a blood test and told me she needed to stay overnight..and that he would connect her to a drip to feed her food, and water.. then he called today and said that my cat has anemia :( :( ..i'm very scared.. is it treatable ? can she fully recover ? what could be the causes ? please help im really worried :(
Cats can recover well from anemia, depending on what the cause is, and that is the key: what is the cause?le.

I've included a link that you might find helpful.

Now, my cat developed anemia from fleas during a period the vet didn't want him to have any toxins in his system (the anemia was worse) and once the fleas got under control, the anemia eased and he is fine now. But, again, it is what is the cause of the anemia and if it is treatab

One of my five 12 week kittens has diarrhoea ?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

The kittens are going to their new homes on Saturday, but one of them has diarrhoea. They are eating normal kitten food, plus special cat milk and the odd bit of milk from their Mum (she has been spayed, goes outside & comes back in to see them - shes a stray) It started last night as just runny poo, and now Ive just noticed that his poo is now like clear water…. He was sick a bit too. Hes still running around and playing. I will take him to the vet in the morning, but any advice for tonight please? The other kittens are fine. Thanks in advance.

Enteritis in kittens can spread like wildfire so my advice would be to isolate this one kitten for the time being and keep an eye on the others. You need the professional advice of a vetinary surgeon so please don’t leave anything to chance with the diarrhoea because if it is enteritis it is a killer.
Don’t rehome this one until it is 100% ok and it might be an idea to delay the rehoming of the others until you know for certain that they are ok too.
I’m sure it will be ok but it does pay to be careful with diarrhoea in kittens.
I hope everything goes ok with all of them (hugs) xx

Unwell cat?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

How long should i leave it before i take my cat to the vets. She's been unwell today, just sleeping after being sick and diarrhoea, and off her food. How long should i keep an eye on her for before i contact the vets?

I'd call them now if she's not eating and has had diarrhea I'd call and see what the oncall vet has to say.

my 12 week old kitten has had diarrhoea for nearly 3 weeks… how can i help him.?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat diarrhoea

he was rescued as a baby as he was thrown out by the family he was born into, the lady who rescued him fed him adult cat food and said that this gave him the diarrhoea.
we fed him kitten food when we first got him, and took him to the vets who gave him an antibiotic injection and advised me to starve him for 12 hours, then feed him white fish.
we did this for 2 days but he still had diarrhoea. we took him back to the vet who gave him another injection and gave me a worming paste + prescription diet to feed him for a week.
we have done this and slowly introduced his original kitten food, but he still has the diarrhoea.
he is not dehydrated, and seems happy and playful.
what else can i do to help him?

I would take the kitten back to the Vet. My question is Why would the woman who rescues kittens feed the kitten adult cat food? sounds odd!
