How does a Vet check your cat for worms?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat worms

Tape worms and heartworms? Same procedure or different and what do they do?

they test the blood and the stool. If you take a stool sample in, it has to be fresh. If you prefer they can get it from the cat at the vets office. If the cat has worms, its a dose of Nemax then again in 3 wks. Heartworms are a little harder to get rid of, but still usually treatable. You want to get all cats in the family treated if one cat comes out positive, it does spead from animal to animal.

I believe they take a blood sample and a fecal sample and examine them for worms or worm eggs

Tape worms need a fecal sample - you can take one in to the office or they can obtain one directly from your cat, if the cat cooperates. I have a cat that doesn't.
Heart worms are checked by a blood sample; you can have a false negative if worms are not circulating in the blood stream.

The test for tapeworm and heartworm are two different procedures. For tapeworms, they can often see the eggs in the feces. Tapeworm eggs look kind of like grains of rice (gross, I know). For other parasitic worms, the vet techs will do a test called a fecal float. It is hard to explain the steps but at the end they look at the sample on a microscope and indentify any eggs.

For heartworm, the vet will do a blood test.

For tape worms it's a fecal exam, because that's where you find tape worms in the gastrointestinal tract. And for heartworms we get a blood sample to check for larvae in the blood.
