Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat worms

Ok, so i've just adopted this awesome cat three days ago. Kittykind did all the vacc's and check ups etc. This morning i found two yellowish pellets when he sat up and when i got home i found one other hardish one stuck to his leg. Please tell me what are the symptoms of worms. I need a reality check so i can either relax or figure out the next move. please help!

Your cat has tapeworms!!! The proglottids from the tapeworm detach themselves from the main worms and crawl out of your cat's anus! Just pick up a prescription from your vet and he should be able to give you something that will kill them. I got my cat from the pound and she had the same problem. The medication cleared it right up.

That's how you know they have a tapeworm (different from round worms). Cats get them from fleas. I'm assuming they were flea dipped and/or Advantix-ed before you brought them home? Then you'll just need a deworming pill from your vet.
If they have fleas, you'll want to get rid of them too, obviously. But the de-worming is just a matter of a pill or two. It's quite common, and nothing to get too freaked out by. It's just kinda gross but easy to treat.
Thanks for adopting kitties who need you!

There are all kinds of worms that cats can get — hookworms, tapeworms, roundworms, pinworms, etc.

It sounds like what you're describing is tapeworms, which are caused by fleas. The cat bites into the flea, which has the tapeworm larvae, which then develops in the intestines. Tapeworms usually resemble grains of rice and are found around the anus and on the back of the legs.

I would contact the group (rescue?) that you adopted her from and tell them about it and see if they will offer for their vet to do a fecal exam (worm check) on her, which they should have had done prior to adoption. If not, you'll need to take her to the vet yourself to determine if she has worms and what kind.

If they are tapeworms, you'll need to make sure you get a good flea treatment (I recommend Advantage) to keep them from coming back.

    Best of luck!

Hi Charlie! First - Congratulations on your new kitty. Even though the adoption agency has done vaccinations and spay/neutering - I would seriously suggest a "well-kitty" check up with a vet. Adoption agencies do the best they can with what they have but, the vet you choose to take care of your new kitty should have only your kitty's welfare in mind.

As far as whether your kitty has worms - probably. Would I try and tell you what type over the Internet - definitely not. The best way to find out what worms your kitty has would be to take a sample in to your vet of choice. ONLY by microscopic examination of a fecal sample can anyone tell you with certainty what type of parasite your kitty has.

If you want to find out about the parasites before your first vet visit - just call the vet you will be using and ask them what time you could drop off a sample for analysis. The cost is usually around $15 - $20.

Good Luck and many happy days and snugly nights with your new kitty.
